TOUCHING OTHER BASES

Speed skating -- Eric Heiden, three-time world champion, and his sister, Beth , the current world junior champ, dominated the US Olympic trials in Milwaukee. Eric, who won the men's 1,000-, 5,000-, and 10,000-meter races, bettered his 1, 000-meter mark with a 1:14.37 clocking, but the time will not be a world record since it was not in a registered international competition. Beth won the women's 1,000- and 3,000- meter events.

College football -- Matt Kupec engineered a decisive 97-yard scoring drive late in the third quarter to give North Carolina a 17-15 Gator Bowl victory over Michigan, which has now lost seven consecutive post-season games. Mark Schubert's three field goals paced Pittsburgh to a 16-10 Fiesta Bowl triumph over Arizona, and Syracuse QB Bill Hurley guided the Blue squad on two TD drives that gave his team a 22-13 win in the annual Blue-Gray game.
