Church group's relief arm airlifts aid for Afghans

About 90,000 pounds of blankets, clothing, and medical supplies have been airlifted to Afghan refugees in Pakistan by Church World Service, the international relief farm of the National Council of Churches, reports Monitor staff writer Richard M. Harley.

The refugees, numbering well over 500,000, have gathered in Pakistan's northwestern provinces seeking refuge from the Soviet invasion of their country, according to the service's field workers. The $175,000 shipment left the United States Jan. 19 and has now arrived in Rawalpindi, Pakistan.
