Violent weekend claims five in Basque country

Hopes of peace in Spain's northern Basque country have dimmed with the killing of five persons in the most violent weekend since Basques approved a home-rule statue three months ago. The grisly weekend, which climaxed with a bomb attack on a highway cafe, pushed the death toll in Basque violence this year to 10, with another 20 wounded.

Neofascist guerrillas, calling themselves the "Spanish Armed Groups," claimed responsibility for the cafe attack. They told a newspaper in San Sebastian that they would kill four left- wing separatists for every policemen or military man killed.
