50 Turks injured in riots; Istanbul banks firebombed

Fifty people were injured and 525 arrested in leftist riots in Izmir Tuesday, and nine banks were firebombed in Istanbul. The leftists in Izmir fought pitched battles with police Tuesday, barricaded themselves in a factory, and blocked the road to the city's airport.

In Istanbul, the nine banks were firebombed by terrorists of express opposition to "American imperialism." Early this month, the nation's armed forces warned the government that the people would no longer tolerate anarchy and said measures must be taken to stop lawlessness. Izmir is Turkey's second-largest port and the only major city not under martial law.
