US anti-trust inquiry on auto industry eased

The government's four-year-long anti-trust inquiry on the auto industry was scaled down Wednesday in light of the increased competition from abroad and economic problems in the companies. The Federal Trade Commission said it was continuing the investigation of the industry but had decided to make substantial cuts in the amount of information it would require from the companies.
