S. Africa on threshold of A-arsenal, report says

South Africa could have a nuclear arsenal within weeks and has probably already tested a nuclear weapon, according to a report circulated Wednesday by the UN Center Against Apartheid. Belgium, Britain, Canada, France, Iran, Israel , Japan, the Netherlands, Switzerland, the United States, and West Germany were named as "collaborators" in the nuclear enterprise.

"South Africa has long been a happy hunting ground for investors from Western Europe or North America, and, to a large extent, uranium mining and the nuclear industry are simply part of the pattern," the report said.

Referring to information released by the US suggesting that South Africa carried out a nuclear weapons test in the South Atlantic last Sept. 22, the report said if it wasn't a test, there must have been extraordinary concidences.
