An ice cream made with snow

Many years ago when the Roman emperor Nero Claudius Caesar wanted a cold dessert on a hot afternoon, he sent runners into the mountains for snow. It was brought back and flavored with fruit juices and honey. The result was the forerunner of our fruit ices or sherbet.

Later eggnog was poured over the snow and a cold dish similar to our ice cream was enjoyed.

Today with prices for ice cream rising along with other food prices, and with snow on the ground, we can take a cue from the early ice cream makers. Here is my recipe: Snow Ice Cream 4 quarts clean snow 4 eggs 2 cups milk 1 cup sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla 1 teaspoon nutmeg

Beat together eggs and milk. Add sugar while continuing to beat. When sugar is dissolved add vanilla and nutmeg.

Pour over snow and fold until blended. Serves about 6. Place on table and see the snow glisten like diamonds.
