American Ambassador wounded in Colombia

US Ambassador to Colombia Diego Ascencio was shot and wounded Wednesday when left-wing guerrillas stormed the Bogota Embassy of the Dominican Republic. A spokesman at Bogota's Military Hospital said Mr. Ascencio was hit by three bullets and was undergoing surgery. His condition was not known. One of his bodyguards also was wounded, the spokesman said.

A Colombian soldier was killed and two policeman and another soldier wounded in a gun battle with 12 guerrillas who took over the embassy and seized several diplomats, including the British and Austrian ambassadors, as hostages, the Defense Ministry spokesman said.
