Rhodesian leader asks security chief to stay

Gen. Peter Walls, head of the Rhodesian security forces, says that Prime Minister-Elect Robert Mugabe has asked him to stay on as head of the nation's military. Monitor correspondent Gary Thatcher reports that the move is yet another attempt at reconciliation in this war-ravaged country, where Mr. Mugabe swept to an overwhelming victory in elections last week.

General Walls headed the government's police, Army, and Air Force during the seven-year guerrilla war here and directed the battle against Mr. Mugabe's Zimbabwe African National Army.
