Time runs out for military draft funding

President Carter's hopes for early passage of legislation funding registration of young men of 19 and 20 for a possible future draft were set back in the House Appropriations Committee Thursday, reports Monitor correspondent John K. Cooley. The committee canceled the meeting scheduled to consider the $ 13.3 million needed for registration. Chairman James Whitten (D) of Mississippi said the committee wants to discuss the money bill in "conjunction with other matters."

Capitol Hill sources said the men's registration bill now has little chance of being passed by the House and sent to the Senate before the 10-day congressional Easter recess begins April 4. A separate measure authorizing women's registration was blocked in committee earlier.
