A Chinese vice-premier in US for military talks

Chinese Vice-Premier Geng Biao met with Defense Secretary Harold Brown at the Pentagon Tuesday to open a five-day Washington visit aimed at laying the basis for limited US-China military cooperation. Defense officials said Secretary Brown told Mr. Geng the United States is ready to discuss the sale of selected high-technology items and military support equipment, but not arms, to Peking.

When he visited Peking last January, Mr. Brown enunciated the US policy of selling China military support equipment and some high technology which may have both a civilian and military use. Such items are not currently being offered to the Soviet Union, officials said.
