Talks on Cyprus split to be resumed this week

Talks between Greek and Turkish communities on the divided island of Cyprus will resume Saturday after a break of more than a year, a United Nations official said Wednesday. The meeting will be an introductory session. The difficult task of trying to reach a full settlement will begin in earnest Sept. 15. the communities will meet every Monday after that, with committees forming to discuss aspects of the Cyprus problem.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when the Turkish Army landed in the north and occupied about 40 percent of the island.
