Inside Report (6)

If the nine-digit code goes through, there may be something new on the front everyone's mail in the US. That new item would be a bar-code -- similar to the series of black lines now found on items at grocery and variety stores.

It would work like this: A computer would "read" the nine-digit code written on your letter, the automatically imprint a bar code containing key information on the bottom righthand side of your letter. The bar code would help automatic handling equipment sort your letter.
