China rebukes Reagan on his Taiwan policy

China publicly rebuked Ronald Reagan's Taiwan policy Thursday, but George Bush suggested the Chinese should steer clear of American presidential politics. The sharp exchange, couched in diplomatic language, occurred when Mr. Bush met for 4 1/2 hours with Foreign Minister Huang Hua and then hosted a lavish banquet for Chinese guests and foreign reporters.

The foreign minister urged Mr. Reagan and Mr. Bush to "highly treasure" and "work to continue to develop" the normalization of relations between the US and mainland China. Any move to upset the current rapprochement, he said, "would be detrimental to the interests of the Chinese and the American peoples as well as the people of the world."
