The Carter-Kennedy detente may begin to pay dividends for the Carter campaign as the two Democrats begin this month a series of joint appearances. The former party foes will appear together at a Democratic fund-raiser in Los Angeles Sept. 22. It will be the first shared podium between them since the Democratic convention in August.

Kennedy reportedly has agreed to campaign actively for Carter in further joint appearances. The senator will zero in on groups in which he ran strongly in the primaries, such as industrial workers and ethnic minority voters.

Carter, for his part, is said to be helping Kennedy retire his $2 million debt from the primary campaign.
