Polish Communists blame 'antisocialists' for turmoil

Poland's Communist Party, clearly alarmed at continuing labor unrest, accused "antisocialist forces" of stirring trouble and trying to exploit workers' grievances to bring down the system here. The accusation coincided with a visit by the new party chief, Stanislaw Kania, to the Silesian mining center of Katowice, focus of industrial action that paralyzed the Silesian coelfields until strikes there were settled last week. Although the government has said that agreements reached with workers along the Baltic and in Silesia apply nationwide, strikes were reported continuing in several major cities. Foreign diplomats here say the relatively minor continuing strikes reflect a deep-rooted mistrust of government promises by people who have seen earlier pledges remain on paper.
