St. Louis school seeks to avert busing trouble

Cleveland High School opened peacefully with beefed-up security patrols and school authorities vowing to weed out "the hoodlum element," after meetings with parents to avert possible trouble at the school, one of several integrated by court-ordered busing that began two weeks ago. Some 400 white students stayed out of classes Friday, many with the permission of their parents, to draw attention to what they said was a lack of security at the school. Their main complaint was alleged harassment of white girls by black boys. No similar complaints have been received from the other high schools in the desegregation plan.
