House OKs cleanup fund for hazardous wastes

The House of Representatives has voted to create a $1.2 billion fund to clean up hazardous chemical waste sites over the next four years. Three- quarters of the money would come from fees collected from the chemical industry. A bill approved by the Senate Public Works Committee and awaiting action by the full Senate would create an $800 million fund. The legislation was promoted by the discovery of toxic chemical wastes at several areas around the country, including Love Canal near Niagara Falls, N.Y.
