Nigerian President meets Carter; oil pitch expected

About these ads

President Carter welcomed Nigerian President Alhaji Shehu Shagari to the White House for talks expected to include a suggestion that the African nation boost its oil production. In addition, the two leaders pledged to work for black majority rule in the South-West Africa, known as Namibia. Mr. Shagari's trip here is his first state visit outside Africa since he became the first democratically elected president of the most powerful of the black African nations. Nigeria, which sells a daily average of 1 million barrels of oil to the US, is under pressure to increase production and exports in light of the cutoff of Iranian and Iraqi oil.
