Business competition touted by Peking paper

China's leading newspaper has attacked "the bureaucratic style of work in commerce" and recommended competition to improve the system. The People's Daily said bureaucratic style included ignorance of market demands, lack of concern about losses or waste, refusal to study economic problems, rudeness to customers , and "abuse of power to monopolize business and oppose competition." Economic competition during the past two years had brought pressure to bear on "official businessmen" who did not know their jobs and who refused to learn.

"This is excellent. We should take firm steps to protect and encourage competition," the paper said.
