Serves you right

It seems safe to say that none of today's presidential campaigners is going to make Adlai Stevenson's mistake of being too witty. Yet voters at any time cannot escape a line like Adlai's from the latter weeks of the '52 campaign: "Your public servants serve you right." After all, poor candidates can't get into office if no one votes for them, nor can good ones. Chuckle with Adlai all the way to the ballot box, but then -- think about it.
