Egypt warns Reagan team against a 'hard line'

President Anwar al-Sadat told the United States it would lose Egypt's support if the incoming administration of Ronald Reagan adopted a hard-line policy toward Cairo. Mr. Sadat did not specify what Egypt would regard as hard-line, but there has been concern that Mr. Reagan might pursue a more pro-Israel policy than did Mr. Carter.

During the election campaign, Mr. Reagan referred to Egypt as a fair-weather friend and to Israel as the United States' most reliable military partner in the Middle East. Mr. Sadat said the American people should tell Mr. Reagan "we are sincere friends and when we stretch out our hand we are being honest and want the other side to be honest with us."
