Chase Manhattan Bank raised its prime rate to 17 3/4 percent from 17 percent and several other major banks immediately followed suit. The prime interest rate was pushed to 17 percent last Friday, and analysts predicted then that an 18- to 18 1/2-percent prime was inevitalbe.
