Key Turkish terror group is broken up, police say

Police reported they had smashed a banned left-wing organization, one of the most efficiently run extremist groups in Turkey. The group, formed to lead a popular uprising, claimed responsibility for most of the street shootings in Ankara of recent years.

Over the past three months, 204 organization members had been arrested. Two weeks ago authorities said they had detained 30,000 political extremists since a coup last September put Gen. Kenan Evren in power.

Police said the arrested militants had run 22 legitimate businesses i n Ankara as a cover for their activities.
