Japan, No. 1 automaker, is asked to help Chrysler

Japan has overtaken the United States as the world's largest manufacturer, with a record production of 11,043,000 vehicles in 1980, the Japan Automobile Manufacturers Association said. Aided by a sharp rise in exports, output increased 14.6 percent in 1980, while output in the US fell more than 30 percent.

Meanwhile, the Japanese finance minister said three US officials were seeking Japan's help in rescuing the ailing Chrysler Corporation. Chrysler has a minor share in Mitsubishi Motors Corporation of Japan, which supplys cars a nd engines for sale by Chrysler in the US.
