Polish students win Warsaw concessions

Polish student leaders Wednesday called for an end to strikes and other campus protests after the government signed a new "freedom charter" for colleges and universities and legalized an independent students union.

A student spokeswoman said the agreement, which a government newspaper said contained far-reaching concessions to students, was signed at the University of Lodz by Higher Education Minister Janusz gorski. She added that the Lodz students, who had occupied faculty buildings for almost a month, were returning to their classes. Lodz strike leaders were appealing to students in other schools across the country to call off sympathy strikes.
