Nicaraguan opposition forced to cancel rally

Nicaragua's major opposition party canceled a Sunday rally that was to have been the country's first major political event not endorsed by the ruling Sandinista government. The cancellation came as progovernment demonstrators burned the home where the opposition party's leader was scheduled to stay and attacked two radio stations and a newspaper.

In several neighborhoods, pro- Sandinista demonstrators were said to be burning tires and shouting slogans against the Nicaragua Democratic Movement. One radio station played tapes of pro-Sandinista crowds shouting that NDM leader Alfonso Robelo Callejas and his party had sold out to US interests.
