Congress shows no signs of wanting to rescue the no-smoking section on US airlines

The Reagan administration wants to shut down the Civil Aeronautics Board even earlier than its expected 1983 demise -- possibly as soon as the fall of 1982. Most of the CAB's functions will cease when it does.

But there is still widespread concern over the future of such regulations as requiring no-smoking sections and compensation or free rides for reserved ticket-holders who are "bumped" from flights.

Notes one CAB insider: "There's a real possibility these areas will be left to each airline to handle on a competitive basis."

Adds a staffer on the Senate committee that will ultimately be responsible for rescue -- if any -- of the consumer regulations: "We just haven't gotten that far yet."m
