Income taxes lead revenues

In 1980, for the eighth year in a row, combined corporate and personal income taxes provided more state tax dollars than did general sales taxes. Commerce Clearing House reports.

Income taxes raised the most revenue in 30 states and the District of Columbia, while sales taxes led the way in the other 20.

State tax collections in all 50 states totaled $136.9 billion, and increase of 9.6 percent from the $124.9 billion collected in fiscal 1979, according to the CCH report of the latest Census Bureau data. Income tax collections totaled source of tax revenue, provided states with $43.2 billion.
