Uganda opposition attacks offices of ruling party

Gunmen attacked the headquarters of President Milton Obote's ruling party Wednesday just hours after explosions cut off electricity to much of Uganda and put the official radio off the air. A spokesman for the clandestine Uganda Freedom Movement, which launched a series of attacks on Kampala police stations in January, later claimed responsibility.

"These attacks are a message to Obote and all the world that we are ready to resist dictatorship," a spokesman added. Since President Obote was restored to power after general elections in December, several dissident groups have declared their armed opposition to the government.
