Blacks in South Africa have a new ally in their struggle against apartheid. That ally: the United Automobile Workers Union of the United States. As part of a 1979 contract settlement with Chrysler Corporation, the UAW won the right to recommend that the trustee of its Chrysler pension fund bar new investments in firms that have not adopted fair employment practices under the so-called "Sullivan principle."

Now the UAW is beginning to exercise that right. It has warned 13 large US corporations that they may no longer be recommended for investment purposes to the pension fund trustee unless they agree to equal employment practices in their plan ts in South Africa.m
