Healing disease by destroying fear
The faces of fear, if they make us afraid, multiply. Can they be banished? Many years ago a man lived such a life of love that his very presence eliminated fear. Health was restored, sinners were freed, lives renewed.
This Godlike man, Christ Jesus, established a theology and medicine based on the great fact that God is Love. Sin, disease, death, were contrary to Love's will. He sometimes said to those healed, "Be not afraid." Divine Love is the irresistible healing power of Christianity.
Today the Science of Christianity -- the laws of Love by which Jesus healed and saved -- shows us how not to be afraid by showing us how to love as Jesus did. This kind of love heals.
Science reveals the spiritual universe of Love's creating without a single destructive element. In the Science of Love all is Spirit, God, and His immortal expression. God's spiritual children, reflecting Love's harmony and goodness, are diseaseless and fearless.
Should we then ignore fear and disease? No, we need to detect them for what they are, godless, and resist and dismiss their suggestions with Science. The Psalmist prayed, "Preserve my life from fear of the enemy." n1

The "enemy" is not a person or thing but evil -- false thoughts about reality , believing it material rather than the reflection of God, divine Spirit. The fear of evil, of error, gives sin and incapacity their delusive power. Like a deadly snake paralyzing a bird with its gaze, fear would incapacitate bodily functions and induce disease. The unhealthy mental state produces an unnatural physical condition. Mary Baker Eddy n2 says, "Nothing but the power of Truth can prevent the fear of error, and prove man's dominion over error." n3

Facing down fear with Truth and Love heals disease. The North American desert bird called the road runner is not mesmerized by fear of poisonous snakes. It kills them. Its dominion is in its own makeup of alertness and agility. So the serpent nature of error has no power to terrorize with disease if we don't give reality or power to its false claim. Our freedom from fear and its effects is in our own real, Christly makeup of intelligence, purity, love -- our health as the sons and daughters of God.
The Christ, Truth, makes us aware of the spiritual facts of being in Science, the loving nature of God and man. Sin, disease, death, are lies against health, holiness, immortality. Right where fear and disease seem to be, Christ shows health natural, Love-created, Truth-sustained, and fear and disease unnatural to man.
During an epidemic I began to manifest all the symptoms of the disease. Fear multiplied -- could I work, would it spread to my family, would I be incapacitated for a long time? The more I thought about it the more distressed I became, and the more the symptoms increased.
Prayerfully I turned to Christian Science for help. I began to see that fear is a false mental state anticipating something going wrong. My fears were based on a belief in something opposed to Love's good creation -- a power, disease, resisting health and harmony. Through Christ I gained a glimpse of God's all-loving nature tenderly caring for all. Truth has no fear of error, Soul no fear of disease, Mind no fear of contagion, Life no fear of death. As I felt God's all-embracing love, fear dissipated and the symptoms disappeared.
The Bible declares, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear." n4 Divine Love, discerned in Science and lived in a Christly life, heals disease by removing fear.
