Tokyo eases its criticism of US in sinking incident

The Japanese government backed away from its previous strong criticism of the United States over the accidental sinking of a Japanese freighter by an American Polaris missile submarine. Japanese Foreign Minister Masayoshi Ito said he was convinced the Americans were working in good faith to settl e the incident.
