Iraq and Iran continued heavy fighting in the Gulf war, with Tehran saying it shot down three Iraqi planes and Baghdad reporting its forces killed 542 Iranians. The Iraqi News Agency quoted a military high command statement as saying the fighting centered on the Iranian town of Sare Pole Zahab, 120 miles northeast of Baghdad. It was the most serious report of fighting in the seven-month-old war from the Iraqi side since February.
Meanwhile in Tehran, about 15,000 black-robed women converged on Tehran University, calling for more rights for women and a larger role in Iranian society. The women, dressed in the all-enveloping chador (veil), called for special programs for women on Iranian radio and television and urged parliament to pass legislation that would grant them a more meaningful role in society.
