'Test-tube pregnancy' reported by US clinic

A controversial in-vitro fertilization clinic has announced the first "test-tube pregnancy" to be induced in the United States. The clinic, run by the Eastern Virginia Medical School, opened 14 months ago amid controversy and critisism from those questioning the ethical and moral advisability of "test-tube baby" technology.

The procedure involves taking an egg from the prospective mother, fertilizing it in laboratory glassware with sperm from a donor, often her husband, and reimplanting the egg in the woman.

A clinic spokeman said the successful pregnancy followed a number of failures and was aided by use of hormones and fertility drugs. He added that he believes it to be fifth such test-tube pregnancy so far announced in the world.
