Not alone

The honest desire for something better than materiality does not originate in a material sense of existence. In the final analysis it comes from God. So when we're down on our knees -- literally or figuratively -- the longing to find a more profound reality, a deeper pool for healing, is really immensely more than the attempt of an unaided person to will himself or herself into the kingdom of heaven. Mary Baker Eddly, the Discoverer and Founder of Christian Science, writes, "That which is formed is not cause, but effect; and has no underived power." n1 Because our desire to know and experience divine goodness comes from God, our humble and persistent efforts to draw close to Him, to feel at one with His love, and to bring out the divine harmony in our lives and bodies, are rewarded.

About these ads

Christ Jesus knew that his healing power came from a divine source. After he healed a man who had been sick for 38 years, he said, "My Father worketh hitherto, and I work." n2 Jesus proved the presence of divine goodness; he knew he was not alone.

n2 John 5:17;

Nor are we. When we reach out to God as meekly and fervently and trustingly as did the master Christian, we find that God, divine Mind, is knowing and establishing the truth of man's spirituality and immortality right where we are.

Of course the evidence of the material senses would never tell us this. This evidence often speaks of our aloneness, of our separation from God. It speaks of a realm where matter, not God, not Spirit, is substance. We're told that matter is both a creator and destroyer, and that man is a vulnerable, mortal personality, sometimes good, sometimes bad, sometimes in between.

But we might compare such a presentation to a dream or a state of hypnosis. In both cases reality is perceived to be something other than what it is, and the actors act out their false sense of being. They smile or suffer until they are awakened or the hypnotism is broken.

When we're endeavoring to wake up to God, Spirit, and to the spiritual universe of divine ideas that God creates, we're in rather a similar position. We may find ourselves in a "dream" state, accepting materiality as the substance and circumference of life. We may feel we are without hope. But we're not alone. god is giving us, through his true idea, or the Christ, the inspiration to break the dream and find peace.

We don't have to make ourselves into the children of God. We wake up, with God's help, to the fact that we are already God's offspring, spiritual ideas of the one Mind. Then the negatives in our thoughts and lives start to fall away because they had a false basis. We set to work with a new assurance to correct what is ungodlike.

About these ads

As we simply, yet fervently and consistently, acknowledge and live the fact that we're th children, the spiritual ideas, of God, divine Mind, we begin thingking and living from that standpoint. God helps us do this because that's exactly the way God knows us -- as His beloved, harmonious, spiritual ideas obedient to Him, to Mind, the only creator.

So when we prayerfully make such an acknowledgment and honestly try to live up to it, we're helped by divine Love. We can say with Paul in all sincerity and unspeakable gratitude, "The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God." n3

n3 Romans 8:16

No, we're not alone in our prayers. God knows our perfect status as His children. That's why we can win.
