Leader of small party faces big jog in Italy

Giovanni Spadolini, the leader of Italy's small Republican Party, will try to form the nation's 41st postwar government, but political analysts say his chances of quick success are slim.

Senator Spadolini received the mandate from President Sandro Pertini after outgoing Prime Minister Arnaldo Forlani gave up trying to put together a new coalition.

Mr. Spadolini, who has campaigned for greater morality in political life and for economic reforms, is expected to try to form a government of Christian Democrats, Socialists, Social De mocrats, and his own party.
