2 In North Carolina get jail for PCB offenses

Two men were sentenced to prison terms for dumping toxic PCB-laced oil along North Carolina roads, the first time jail sentences have been ordered for PCB violations.

A US district judge sentenced Robert E. Ward of Raleigh to 2 1/2 years in prison and fined him $200,000 for the 1978 dumping. Robert J. Burns of Jamestown, N.Y., was sentenced to 1 1/2 years in prison.

PCBs, used as an insulator in electrical tra nsformers, have been linked in tests to cancer in animals.
