US said to tighten wraps around 'Stealth' bomber

The Soviet Union has picked the supersecret "Stealth" bomber program as its next objective in a campaign to pirate US military and technological secrets, Newsweek magazine reported. As a result, it said, security is being tightened at defense bases involved with the project.

The "Stealth" program is aimed at developing a bomber fitted with special equipment enabling it to foil tracking and steal past enemy detection.

US officials said Moscow has embarked on a campaign to steal American secrets. The latest episode came to light with last week's arrests in California of a veteran Hughes Aircraft Company engineer and a Polish national on espionage charges.

With more communist diplomats, students, and trade groups in the US, the FBI has alerted defense contractors to heighten vigilance against possible spies.
