Nonofficial status stands, US says of its Taiwan ties

A White House spokesman said the Reagan administration has no intention of altering the nonofficial relationship the United States has maintained with Taiwan since formal diplomatic ties were ended in 1979. At the same time, deputy press secretary Larry Speakes left open the possibility that Taiwan would be allowed to increase the number of liaison offices it has in the US. Mr. Speakes was responding to questions about a Washington Post report from Taiwan quoting officials there as saying they had received signals that President R eagan would upgrade the relationship.
