Protests erupt in Belfast as fifth IRA striker dies

New anti-British protests in the streets of Roman Catholic west Belfast erupted after the death of a jailed Irish nationalist guerrilla, Joseph McDonnell, on the 61st day of his hunger strike. McDonnell was the fifth hunger striker to die in a campaign by Irish nationalist prisoners for political status. He died hours before Britain moved to halt more deaths by offering concessions if the hunger strikers at Maze Prison would give up.
