TOUCHING OTHER BASES; Good sports, bad golfers

Many pro athletes turn to golf for fun and relaxation during the off-season. Consequently, getting football, basketball, and hockey players to tee it up for charity has never been difficult. Generally, however, the high-handicappers stay home, letting the more adept shotmakers handle the celebrity chores.

Perhaps for comic relief, Nike Sporting Goods lured a grab-bag field for the National Basketball Association Classic, a benefit held at a club near Portland, Ore. At one end of the skill spectrum were Bob Gross, the winner, with a 2 -over-par 74, and the runner-up, Dr. Terry Dischinger, a former NBA player who finished one stroke back. At the other end, however, were such unabashed hackers as Rudy Tomjanovich, Dan Roundfield, and Jamaal Wilkes, who carded 137, 1 47, and 148, respectively.
