La Paz, Bolivia
Two Bolivian Army generals demanded the resignation of President Luis Garcia Meza and proclaimed themselves leaders of a "national-dignity government." Former Army Chief of Staff Lucio Anez Rivero said he and former President Alberto Natusch Busch were supported by troops controlling the eastern province of Santa Cruz.
A rebel radio broadcast said the movement sought to restore honesty in Bolivia, which had been tarnished by "corruption and drug trafficking."
General Anez Rivero said the coup had the support of other major military units throughout the country.
There was no immediate reaction from President Garcia Meza, who has fought off several attempts to overthrow him since coming to power in a co up a year ago.
