CIA tied to Green Berets in anti-Qaddafi training

A Green Beret sergeant and nine former members of the Army's elite commando troop, thinking they were on a CIA-approved mission to infiltrate the government of Col. Muammar Qaddafi, trained Libyan terrorists four years ago, the New York Times reports. The CIA denied involvement in the mission, although the Times said participants and federal investigators say it had at least tacit CIA approval.

Edwin P. Wilson, a former CIA agent charged in 1980 with exporting explosives to Libya, organized and financed the operation, the newspaper said. In July 1979 the Justice Department questioned many of the Green Berets before a grand jury, but no indictments were returned.
