Elsewhere in baseball last week, manager Whitey Herzog of the St. Louis Cardinals fined shortstop Garry Templeton $5,000 and suspended him indefinitely for making obscene gestures at spectators. The incident occurred when the home crowd got on Templeton after he had struck out and made no attempt to run to first base when the ball got away from the catcher.

Templeton, who has hit over .300 in three of his four years as a Cardinal regular, is a super athlete who probably has more range than any infielder in baseball. He has had problems on and off the field before, however, and there was immediate speculation that he would be traded at the end of the season.
