Burger opens exhibition of America art in Peking

US Chief Justice Warren E. Burger cut the ribbon Tuesday to open the first formal exhibition of American art to be held in Communist China, including contemporary works that some Chinese officials were said to be unhappy about displaying. A Chinese source said there had been considerable debate before approval was given to exhibit abstract paintings by artists such as Jackson Pollock and Franz Kline.

China has recently renewed a campaign against "bourgeois liberalism" in the arts, cracking down particularly on authors who think they can write what they like.
