Is it possible that Labor Day came later without making the summer seem longer? Of course, equinoctially speaking, it is still summer and will be until Sept. 22. But in our particular weather zone a tang in the air brings on a fall frame of mind. There were a lot of headlines in the past few months, but summer wrapped them in haze and beach towels. Nothing really seemed to be happening beyond the distance of a skipped stone. Now the year in earnest begins, unswaddled from 24-hour warmth. Fall people can start to believe that events are actually taking place again.
