New US report cites flaws in nuclear power plants

Nearly one-third of the nation's 50 nuclear power plants are "below average" in complying with operating regulations, according to a federal report. The New York Times, which obtained a copy of the unreleased study by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, reported 15 of the plants, including five in New York and New Jersey, were reported below average in such areas as management control, maintenance, radiation, and fire protection.

The report said none of the nation's nuclear plants had problems serious enough to warrant concern about the safety of their continued operation.
