Polish strikes spread from mining center

Strikes and strike alerts multiplied in Poland Wednesday and tension remained high in the Katowice mining center after clashes between police and Solidarity supporters the day before.

In the western province of Zielona Gora about 150,000 workers in up to 700 plants staged a one-hour warning strike and threatened to begin an indefinite strike today (Oct. 22) to bring the province to a standstill.
