Mexico recalls US envoy over shift on immigration

Mexico called home its Washington ambassador for consultations over a recent change in US immigration policy that will affect thousands of Mexicans in the United States, the Los Angeles Times reports.

The move is apparently a way of expressing displeasure over a sudden decision that will cause many Mexicans to lose their legal status in the US and make them vulnerable to deportation.

The recall of Ambassador Hugo B. Margain was the government's first reaction to the news that Mexicans who have applied for legal residency in the US under terms of the so-called Silva letter are being informed that the document is no longer valid.
